Do all Suspensions Require Instructional Support to be Reported?

According to Education Code Section 48913.5:

(a) Upon the request of a parent, legal guardian, or the affected pupil, a teacher shall provide to a pupil in grades 1 to 12 who has been suspended for two or more school days the homework that the pupil would otherwise have been assigned.

(b) If the requested homework is submitted on time and not graded before the end of the academic term, it shall not be included in the calculation of the pupil’s overall grade.

CALPADS Reporting Guidance:

  • The 'Instructional Support' field (ADS.ISI) must be marked 'Y' or 'N' to indicate whether instructional support was provided during a suspension.
  • This field is required for all students and is used for reporting purposes only.
  • Instructional support may include homework, tutoring, or access to alternative educational settings.

Additional Notes:

  • Instructional support is not automatically required; it must be requested by the parent or student.
  • Schools must ensure accurate reporting in CALPADS regardless of whether support is provided.
  • This guidance applies to all students, with particular emphasis on students with disabilities.
