The 300 hour minimum instructional requirement for a Career Pathway has been removed. This requirement was identified for removal following an April 2023 review by the Office of Career Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE), which found the language conflicted with the federal Perkins V definition of a CTE concentrator, a student who has completed at least two courses in a single CTE program. California also requires a Capstone course within that sequence, with a grade of C minus or better, for completer and College/Career Indicator recognition. Neither of these standards references a minimum number of hours or years.

Earlier state guidance also allowed a single long course, at least 300 hours with internal sequential units of instruction, to stand in for a full pathway. That language is being removed for the same reason, since it conflicted with the federal two course requirement.

Because pathway structure and timeline affect CALPADS reporting and CCI eligibility, districts should confirm with the California Department of Education whether a given course sequence and schedule meets current pathway requirements before implementing it. Aeries does not set or interpret CTE pathway policy. Questions about pathway design, including whether a one year, two course structure qualifies for a specific program, should be directed to CDE.
