Course Setup Overview

Placeholder Courses and Sections need to be created for each period. Course information for the placeholder courses do not need to be populated. The courses will be changed from the placeholder course to the actual appropriate course for each Alternative Education student. The Course Data from the actual Course will be used for CALPADS State Reporting.

In the example below, placeholder courses and sections have been created for each subject area in the Master Schedule:

Sections in the Master Schedule:

  • Create sections by periods. Below is an example format:
    • Period 0 - Alt Ed Period 0
    • Period 1 - Alt Ed Period 1
    • Period 2 - Alt Ed Period 2
    • Period 3 - Alt Ed Period 3
    • Period 4 - Alt Ed Period 4
    • Period 5 - Alt Ed Period 5
  • Populate the section with the Alternative Education teacher number
  • Populate the appropriate fields for the section including the following fields:
    • Education Service - MST.ESR
    • Language Instruction - MST.LI
    • Instructional Strategy - MST.INS
    • Funding Source -  MST.FS
    • CTE Provider - MST.TEP
    • Independent Study - MST.ISI
    • Distance Learning - MST.DLI

NOTE:  If any of the section information does not apply to all students in the section, separate sections may need to be created. Ex:  Several sections may need to be created for different Education Service codes for CALPADS reporting.

Master Schedule/Scheduling Master Setting

School setting for schools using Course Based Independent Study

For schools who are not using Alternative Ed Scheduling schoolwide and the school setting Allow Individual Sections to be Flagged for Alt Ed Scheduling is enabled, a field for Alt Ed Sched Enabled will display on the section in the MST or SMS tables. Enable this flag in order for the section to honor the Alt Ed scheduling rules. This flag is also available on both the Master Schedule and Scheduling Master page. This flag will trigger the class schedule (SEC) table to allow this section to have the course ID number changed to the actual course that the student is taking. See Alt Ed Student Scheduling for more information.
